Sedikit pesanan

Teringat pesan ayahanda...
"Sudahkah di Qada' Solat yang lepas-lepas? Jika tidak ingat, gantikanlah dengan mengira berapa usia kita sekarang ditolak kira-kira 10 tahun dari mula akil baligh kita..." Subhanallah, betapa alpa nya kami... Sesungguhnya Engkau maha penerima taubat...
Peringatan buat diriku yang sering lupa........
Adakah kita seorang Islam???? Pernahkah kita terfikir...
ekonomi, timbul pula gejala murtad... Fitnah.. gempa bumi, peperangan
dan bermacam-macam lagi. Ini sebenarnya adalah ujian Allah kepada kita. Adakah kita benar-benar menginsafinya. Semua ini juga adalah bala!! Tanda kemurkaan Allah!! Adakah kita benar-benar seorang Islam???? Adakah kita yakin kita seorang Islam???
Sedangkan Rabiatul Adawiyah tidak mahu melupakan Allah walau sedetik
sekalipun. Hassan Al-Basri pula menangis sampai berjujuran airmata kerana menyesal melupai Allah dalam beberapa minit. Tetapi, mengapa kita masih leka di buai perasaan...
Tidakkah kita berasa rugi kerana kurang berzikir kepada Allah..
Tidakkah kita berasa rugi kerana kurang berselawat kepada Rasulullah...
Siapa diri kita sebenarnya!!!! Firaun???
Kita ketawa ... ** kita tidak malu pada Allah?
Kita cemerlang dalam SPM,PASCAL, LOGIK, TITAS,C++, ...
* kita yakin semua itu dapat membantu kita menjelangnya fitnah kubur?
Kita berpuasa ** kita yakin puasa kita mulia sehingga dapat membela
kita di hari akhirat?
Kita sihat ... ** kita yakin Allah muliakan kita?
Kita sakit ...

rumahtangga jadi sepakat, masyarakat jadi muafakat,
negara menjadi kuat, negara luar jadi hormat,
permusuhan tersekat, pembangunan pun meningkat,
kemajuan menjadi pesat.

TETAPI INGAT,
Apabila pembangunan meningkat, kemajuan menjadi pesat,
kita lihat bangunan naik bertingkat-tingkat.

sembahyang makin hari makin liat,
orang baik ada yang bertukar jadi jahat,
orang miskin pula nak kaya cepat,
orang tua pula nak mati lambat,
tak dapat minum madu telan jerla minyak gamat.

Yang lelaki, budak budak muda pakai seluar ketat,
Semua nak tunjuk hebat,
Bila berjudi, percaya unsur kurafat,
Tapi hidup pula yang melarat,
Tali kasut dah tak berikat,
Rambut pun jarang sikat.

Yang perempuan pakai mini sekerat,
Suka pakai baju ketat,
Suka sangat menunjukkan pusat,
Hingga tak pedulikan lagi batasan aurat,
Pakai pulak yang singkat-singkat,
Kadang-kadang ternampak benda 'bulat'.

Bila jadi macam ini siapa lihat pasti tercegat,
Silap gaya jadi gawat,
bohsia bohjan lagi hebat,
Duduk jauh berkirim surat,
Bila berjumpa, tangan berjabat,
Kemudian pakat lawan peluk siapa erat,
Masa tu, nafas naik sampai tersekat-sekat,
Usah peduli agama dan adat,
Usah takut Allah dan malaikat,
Yang penting apa kita nak buat?
Kita 'bukti' lah kita buat,
Akhirnya perut kempis dah jadi bulat,
Apabila perut kempis dah jadi bulat,
maka lahirlah pula anak-anak yang tak cukup sifat,
Bila anak-anak tak cukup sifat,
jam tu kita tengok bayi dibuang di merata tempat.

MAKNANYA KETIKA ITU, IBLIS MULA MELOMPAT.
Dia kata apa? Habis manusia dah masuk jerat,
Habis manusia telah tersesat,
Inilah dia fenomena masyarakat.
Oleh itu wahai saudaraku dan para sahabat,
Marilah kita pakat mengingat,

Masa tu, sindri mau ingat.

Umur mu banyak mana mu buat ibadat...?

BUSY?

I knelt to pray but not for long,
I had too much to do.
I had to hurry and get to work
For bills would soon be due.
So I knelt and said a hurried prayer,
And jumped up off my knees.
My Muslim duty was now done
My soul could rest at ease.
All day long I had no time
To spread a word of cheer.
No time to speak of Allah to friends,
They'd laugh at me I'd fear.
No time, no time, too much to do,
That was my constant cry,
No time to give to souls in need
But at last the time, the time to die.
I went before the Lord,
I came, I stood with downcast eyes.
For in his hands God held a book;
It was the book of life.
God looked into his book and said
Your name I cannot find.
I once was going to write it down...
But never found the time"

Muharram: The Start of the Islamic Calendar

Muharram is the month with which the Muslims begin their lunar Hijrah Calendar. It is one of the four sanctified months about which the Holy Quran says, "The number of the months according to Allah is twelve months (mentioned) in the Book of Allah on the day in which He created heavens and the earth. Among these (twelve months) there are four sanctified".

These four months, according to the authentic traditions are the months of Zulqadah, Zulhijjah, Muharram and Rajab. All the commentators of the Holy Quran are unanimous on this point, because the Holy Prophet in his sermon on the occasion of his last Hajj, has declared:

"One year consists of twelve months, of which four are sanctified months, three of them are in sequence; Zulqadah, Zulhijjah, Muharram, and the fourth is Rajab."

The specific mention of these four months does not mean that any other month has no sanctity, because the month of Ramadan is admittedly the most sanctified month in the year. But these four months were specifically termed as sanctified months for the simple reason that their sanctity was accepted even by the pagans of Makkah.

In fact, every month, out of the twelve, is originally equal to the other, and there is no inherent sanctity, which may be attributed to one of them in comparison to other months. When Allah Almighty chooses a particular time for His special blessings, then it acquires sanctity out of His grace.

Thus, the sanctity of these four months was recognized right from the days of Sayyidina Ibrahim. Since the Pagans of Makkah attributed themselves to Sayyidina Ibrahim they observed the sanctity of these four months and despite their frequent tribal battles, they held it unlawful to fight in these months.

In the Shariah of our Holy Prophet the sanctity of these months was upheld and the Holy Quran referred to them as the "sanctified months".

The month of Muharram has certain other characteristics peculiar to it, which are specified below.

Fasting during the month

The Holy Prophet has said:

"The best fasts after the fasts of Ramadan are those of the month of Muharram."

Although the fasts of the month of Muharram are not obligatory, yet, the one who fasts in these days out of his own will and choice is entitled to a great reward by Allah Almighty. The Hadith cited above signifies that the fasts of the month of Muharram are most reward-able ones among the Nafl fasts i.e. the fasts one observes out of his own choice without being obligatory on him.

The Hadith does not mean that the award promised for fasts of Muharram can be achieved only by fasting for the whole month. On the contrary, each fast during this month has merit. Therefore, one should avail of this opportunity as much as he can.

The day of Ashurah

Although the month of Muharram is a sanctified month as a whole, yet, the 10th day of Muharram is the most sacred among all its days. The day is named Ashurah.

According to the Holy companion Ibn Abbas. The Holy Prophet , when migrated to Madinah, found that the Jews of Madinah used to fast on the 10th day of Muharram. They said that it was the day on which the Holy Prophet Musa (Moses) and his followers crossed the Red Sea miraculously and the Pharaoh was drowned in its water.

On hearing this from the Jews, the Holy Prophet said, "We are more closely related to Musa than you" and directed the Muslims to fast on the day of Ashurah. (Abu Dawood)

It is also reported in a number of authentic traditions that in the beginning, fasting on the day of Ashurah was obligatory for the Muslims.

It was later that the fasts of Ramadan were made obligatory and the fast on the day of ''Ashurah was made optional. Sayyidah Aishah has said:

"When the Holy Prophet came to Madinah, he fasted on the day of Ashurahh and directed the people to fast it. But when the fasts of Ramadan were made obligatory, the obligation of fasting was confined to Ramadan and the obligatory nature of the fast of Ashurah was abandoned. One can fast on this day, if he so wills, or can avoid fasting, if he so wills."

However, the Holy Prophet used to fast on the day of Ashurah even after the fasting in Ramadan was made obligatory.

Abdullah Ian Masud reports that the Holy Prophet preferred the fast of Ashurah to the fast of other days and preferred the fast of Ramadhan to the fast of Ashurahh. (Bukhari and Muslim)

In short, it is established through a number of authentic hadith that fasting on the day of Ashurah is Sunnah of the Holy Prophet and makes one entitled to a great reward.

According to another Hadith, it is more advisable that the fast of Ashurah should either be prefixed or suffixed by another fast. It means that one should fast two days: the 9th an 10th of Muharram or the 10th and 11th of it. The reason of this additional fast as mentioned by the Holy Prophet is that the Jews used to fast on the day of Ashurah alone, and the Holy Prophet wanted to distinguish the Islamic-way of fasting from that of Jews. Therefore, he advised the Muslims to add another fast to that of Ashurah.

Some traditions signify another feature of the day of Ashurah.

According to these traditions one should be more generous to his family by providing more food to them on this day as compared to other days. These traditions are not very authentic according to the science of Hadith. Yet, some Scholars like Baihaqi and Ibn Hibban have accepted them as reliable.

What is mentioned above is all that is supported through authentic sources about Ashurah.

However, there are some legends and misconceptions with regard to Ashurah that have managed to find their way into the minds of the ignorant, but have no support of authentic Islamic sources, some very common of them are these:

This is the day in which Adam was created.

This is the day in which Ibrahim was born.

This is the day in which Allah accepted the repentance of Sayyidina Ibrahim.

This is the day on which the Qiyamah (dooms-day) will take place.

Whoever takes bath in the day of Ashurah will never get ill.

All these and other similar whims and fancies are totally baseless and the traditions referred to in this respect are not worthy of any credit.

Some people take it as Sunnah to prepare a particular type of meal in the day of Ashurah. This practice, too, has no basis in the authentic Islamic sources.

Some other people attribute the sanctity of Ashurah to the martyrdom of Sayyidina Husain during his battle with the Syrian army. No doubt, the martyrdom of Sayyidina Husain is one of the most tragic episodes of our history. Yet, the sanctity of Ashurah cannot be ascribed to this event for the simple reason that the sanctity of 'Ashurah was established during the days of the Holy Prophet much earlier than the birth of Sayyidna Husain.

On the contrary, it is one of the merits of Sayyidna Husain that his martyrdom took place on the day of Ashurah.

Another misconception about the month of Muharram is that it is an evil or unlucky month, for Sayyidna Husain was killed in it. It is for this misconception that people avoid holding marriage ceremonies in the month of Muharram. This is again a baseless concept which is contrary to the express teachings of the Holy Quran and the Sunnah. Such superstitions have been totally negated by the Holy Prophet . If the death of an eminent person in a particular day renders that day unlucky for all times to come, one can hardly find a day, free from this bad luck, out of 365 days of the whole year, because each and every day has a history of the demise of some eminent person. The Holy Quran and the Sunnah of the Holy Prophet have made us free from such superstitious beliefs, and they should deserve no attention.

Another wrong practice related to this month is to hold the lamentation and mourning ceremonies in the memory of martyrdom of Sayyidna Husain.

As mentioned earlier, the event of Karbala is one of the most tragic events of our history, but the Holy Prophet has forbidden us from holding the mourning ceremonies on the death of any person. The people of Jahiliyyah (Ignorance) used to mourn over their deceased relatives or friends through loud lamentations, by tearing their clothes and by beating their cheeks and chests. The Holy Prophet stopped the Muslims from doing all this and directed them to observe patience by saying "Inna lillaahi wa innaa ilayhi raaji oon". A number of authentic hadith are available on the subject.

To quote only one of them:

"He is not from our group who slaps his cheeks, tears his clothes and cries in the manner of the people of jahiliyyah."

All the authentic jurists are unanimous on the point that the mourning of this type is absolutely impermissible. Even Sayyidna Husain shortly before his demise, had advised his beloved sister Sayyidah Zainab not to mourn over his death in this manner. He said:

"My dear sister, I swear upon you that you, in case I die, shall not tear your clothes, nor scratch your face, nor curse anyone for me or pray for your death".

It is evident from this advice of Sayyidna Husain that this type of mourning is condemned even by the blessed person for the memory of whom these mourning ceremonies are held. Every Muslim should avoid this practice and abide by the teachings of the Holy Prophet and his beloved grand child Sayyidina Husain.

Blessings of Muharram

It is the first month of the Islamic Calendar.

The meaning of the word:- The word "Muharram" means "Forbidden." Even before Islam, this month was always known as a scared month in which all unlawful acts were forbidden, prominently the shedding of blood.

A blessing of Muharram:- There are many bounties of this month, especially the tenth of Muharram.

Two of the many virtues of the 10th of Muharram:-

On this day he who spends more lavishly for the sake of his family members, Allah Taala will bestow blessing upon the sustenance of the following year.

Abu Qataada has related that the Prophet has reported to have said, It is my thought that by fasting on the 10th of Muharram Allah Taala will pardon the sins of the past year. (Tirmizi)

Events of Muharram

Hadhrat Hussain was martyred in this month.

Shaykhain Tirmizi & Haakim has narrated from Anas that the following verse:

"Allah may forgive thee of thy sins that which is past and that which is to come." (Al-Fath) was revealed on the 10th of Muharram.

The Prophet Muhammed went to defeat Bani Muhaarin and Bani Tha'laba (Tribes of Bani Gatfan) in the year 4 A.H. (Asahhus-siyar)

Ash-Shura (The Consultation)
Chapter 24: Verse 10

The Settler of Differences
"Whatever it be wherein ye differ, the decision thereof is with Allah: such is Allah my Lord: in Him I trust, and to Him I turn.”

This is the natural and logical demand of Allah Almighty's being the Master of the Universe and His being the real Guardian. When Sovereignty and Guardianship belong to Him only inevitably He alone is also the Ruler, and it is for Him to judge human beings' mutual disputes and differences.

The words are general and they clearly proclaim Allah as having the sole right to judge all disputes and differences - not only in the hereafter or on 'religious matters'. He is the Settler of the differences pertaining to beliefs as to what is the Truth and what is falsehood. He is the Settler of differences as to what is pure for man and what is impure, what is lawful and desirable for him and what is forbidden and undesirable, what is evil and vicious in morals and what is good and virtuous, what are the rights of the people in their mutual dealings and what are the right practices in social, political and economic life and what are wrong.

Dignity of Work

Some people regard certain kinds of work or professions as contemptible. However, the Prophet (peace be upon him) denied the validity of this notion. He taught his Companions that the whole of a human being's dignity is tied up with his work - any sort of work - and that real disgrace and humiliation consist of depending on other people's help. He said,

It is better that a person should take a rope and bring a bundle of wood on his back to sell so that Allah may preserve his honour, than that he should beg from people, (regardless of) whether they give to him or refuse him. [Al-Bukhari, Muslim]

A Muslim can earn his livelihood by agriculture, trade, or industry or by any profession or employment as long as it does not involve doing, supporting, or propagating anything haram.

Sharon 's Speech: Decoded Version

He read out the written text of his speech, word for word, without raising his eyes from the page.

It was vital for him to stick to the exact wording, since it was an encoded text. It is impossible to decipher it without breaking the code. And it is impossible to break the code without knowing Ariel Sharon very well indeed.

So it is no surprise that the flood of interpretations in Israel and abroad was ridiculous. The commentators just did not understand what they had heard. That's why they wrote things like "He did not say anything new", "He has no plan", "He is marking time", "He is old and tired". And the usual Washington reaction: "A positive step, but…"

Nonsense. In his speech, Sharon outlined a whole, detailed - and extremely dangerous - plan. Those who did not understand - Israelis, Palestinians and for ei gn diplomats - will be unable to react effectively.

Here is the deciphered text of Sharon 's "Herzliyah speech":

The name of the game is Hitnatkut ("cutting ourselves off"). Meaning: most of the West Bank area will become de facto a part of Israeli, and the rest we shall leave to the Palestinians, who will be enclosed in isolated enclaves. From these enclaves, the settlements will be removed.

Stage One: In order to do this, we need time - about half a year. We are talking about a large-scale and complicated military operation. The army will have to occupy and fortify new lines, while "relocating" dozens of isolated settlements. This will require detailed planning, which has not yet even started. The necessary forces and instruments will have to be prepared. Half a year is the minimum.

During this period we shall not be idle. On the contrary, we shall finish the "separation fence", and it will play a major part in the new deployment. We shall develop the "settlement blocs", to which we shall transfer the settlers who will be relocated.

The execution of the plan in half a year is perfectly timed. At exactly that time the American election campaign will reach its climax. No American politician will dare to utter a word against Israel . The Democrats need the Jewish votes and money. The Republicans also need the votes and the money of the 60 million Christian fundamentalists, who support the most extreme elements in Israel .

While we quietly prepare the big operation, we shall continue to flatter President Bush and praise his idiotic Road Map, without, of course, fulfilling any of our obligations under the Map. But we shall blame the Palestinians for violating it.

At the same time we shall pretend to seek negotiations with the Palestinians. We shall try to meet with Abu-Ala as many times as possible and play the game to the end. When we are ready to go, we shall terminate the contacts, declare the Road Map dead and state sorrowfully that all our efforts to start peace negotiations have failed because of Arafat.

Stage two: By then, the "separation wall" will be ready. The Palestinian territories (Areas A and B under Oslo ) will be surrounded on all sides. In practice there will be about a dozen isolated pockets. In order to fulfil our promise about Palestinian "contiguity" we shall connect the enclaves by special roads, bridges and tunnels, which we shall be able to cut at a moment's notice.

The army will withdraw gradually to the separation barrier and redeploy in the territories that will be annexed to Israel, including, inter alia, the settlement blocs of Karney Shomron, Elkana, Ariel and Kedumim; the Modi'in Road and the territory south of it up to the Green Line, all the Greater Jerusalem area already annexed in 1967; the new n ei ghborhoods around Jerusalem up to Maaleh Adumim and perhaps further; the Jewish settlement in Hebron and Kiryat Arba and the settlements in the Hebron area; all the Dead Sea shore; all the Jordan valley, including about 15 km of the banks. Altogether, more than half the West Bank .

These areas will not be annexed officially, but we shall annex them as rapidly as possible in practice. We shall fill them with settlements (also using the settlers from the "relocated" settlements), industrial parks, roads, public institutions and army installations, so that they will become indistinguishable from parts of Israel proper.

At the same time, we shall evacuate the settlements beyond the barrier, including those in the Gaza Strip (with or without the Katif bloc.)

In line with the American proposal, we shall call the Palestinian enclaves "a Palestinian State with Temporary Borders". That will give the Palestinians the illusion that they will be able to negotiate the "permanent" borders. But, of course, the "separation fence" will be the final border.

The terror will not stop completely, but the Palestinian enclaves will be at our mercy and we shall be able to cut each of them off at any time, prevent movement from one to another and make life in them intolerable. It will not be worthwhile for them to conduct violent acts.

Officially, the Palestinians will have free access to the border crossings to Egypt and Jordan , but in practice we shall maintain an effective military presence, enabling us to stop movement there at any time.

At first the world will scream, but faced with a fait accompli they will quieten down. Even if Bush remains in the White House, he will be paralysed until after the elections at the end of 2004. If a Democrat is elected president, he will need some months to settle down. By then everything will be finished, and we shall be able to generously agree to some minor adjustments.

This is the Plan. Can it be realized?

It is quite possible that Sharon will convince Israeli public opinion. The great majority of the public is united around two points: (a) the longing for peace and security, and (b) the distrust of Arabs and the unwillingness to deal with them. (Some weeks ago, a satirical supplement published a slogan: "YES to peace, NO to Palestinians".)

Sharon 's plan promises both. It promises peace and security, and it is entirely "unilateral". No negotiations with Palestinians are required, it does not depend on the will of the Arabs, who can be ignored entirely.

In this respect, Sharon 's plan has a great advantage over the Geneva Initiative, which is entirely based on the assumption that "there is a partner" and that we must negotiate with the Palestinians and make peace with them. Long years of brainwashing, led by Ehud Barak and most of the other leaders of the "Zionist Left", have convinced the Israeli public that there is no partner, that the Arabs are cheating, that Arafat has broken every single agreement he has signed, etc. The Sharon plan conforms to all these myths, while the Geneva Initiative clashes with them.

But beneath the road to the implementation of the Sharon Plan there lie two big landmines: the settlers and the Palestinians.

The inhabitants of the settlements that are supposed to be "relocated" include some of the most extreme elements of the settlement movement. There is no chance that these will go away peacefully. They will have to be removed by force.

That will require a huge military effort. While many moderate settlers will remove themselves voluntarily if given fat compensation, many others will resist. According to an informed estimate, some 5000 soldiers and policemen will be needed to remove just one small "outpost": Migron, near Ramallah, which Sharon was supposed to have removed long ago according to the Road Map. When dozens of bigger and more established settlements have to be removed, it will need a giant, quasi war-like operation, requiring a general call up of reserves, with all the political implications.

The army cannot just leave these territories with the settlements remaining behind. As long as the settlements are there, the army will be there. In other words, the implementation of the plan will not be quick and tidy, like the last night in south Lebanon , but a process of many months, perhaps years.

While the deployment in the areas that will be de facto annexed to Israel will be quick and effective, the transfer of the territories that will be turned over to the Palestinians will be very slow.

It is a complete illusion to believe that all this time the Palestinians will quietly look on. They will see the execution of a plan that they believe, quite rightly, to be a device for the destruction of the national aims of the Palestinian people. Clearly there will be no place in the Palestinian enclaves for returning refugees (not to mention any return of refugees to Israel itself). To call this structure a " Palestinian State " is a joke in bad taste.

If Sharon succeeds in executing his plan, a new chapter in the 100-year old Israeli-Palestinian conflict will be opened. The Palestinians will be crowded into territories that will constitute about 10% of the original territory of Palestine before 1948. They will have no chance of enlarging this territory. On the contrary: they will be afraid of Sharon and his successors trying to remove them from what is left, completing the ethnic cleansing of Eretz Israel .

Therefore, the Palestinians will fight against this plan, and th ei r struggle will intensify the more it progresses. All possible means will be employed: firing missiles and mortar shells over the separation barrier, sending suicide bombers into Israel , and so on. Probably, the violent fight will spill over into many other countries around the world, both on the ground and in the air. There will be no peace, no security.

In the end, the basic factors will be decisive: the endurance of the two peoples, th ei r readiness to continue the bloody fight, with all its economic and social implications, as well as the willingness of the world to look on passively.

The idea of "unilateral peace" is strikingly original. "Peace without the other side" is a contradiction in terms. Learned people will call it an oxymoron, a Greek term meaning, literally, a sharp folly.

Eventually, the fate of this plan will be the same as the fate of all the other grandiose plans put forward by Sharon it in his long career. One need only think of the Lebanon war and its price.

No Point In Wearing Hijab

Question

As-salamu `alaykum.

I am a well-educated, married, Muslim woman. I was raised on proper Islamic values,al-hamdu lillah. I have a beautiful 14 year old daughter who began regular prayer and fasting the full month of Ramadan when she was 7 years old. She is very clever in school and is at the top of her class. Last Ramadan she decided to wear the hijab and I agreed. The problem is that I do not wear the hijab and I do not feel bad about it. I am very religious and I raised my daughter according to proper Islamic values, the same way I was raised; I come from a very religious family. I wear proper Islamic clothes but I do not wear the hijab. I cut my hair very short and I am 39 years old. I do not feel that my hair is fitnah (temptation) to anybody, or so I always tell myself. I pray regularly, I fast, I pay, zakah (obligatory alms) and give charity; I do lots of charity work. I feel satisfied.

I do not think that this little piece of cloth to cover a few inches of hair will add anything to my behavior or my strong religious beliefs and activity. I do not wear tight, short or transparent clothes. I am very respectable. I am saving money to be able to afford Hajj (Pilgrimage to the Ka`bah). So do you think that wearing the hijab is that necessary to me, especially since in Egypt lots of veiled women do not even pray and unfortunately they set a very bad image of Islam. Whenever I try to wear the veil and I look at myself in the mirror, I feel that I am looking at someone else. I feel that I lost my identity. Could you please advise me?

Answer

As-salamu `alaykum.
Thank you, thank you, and thank you for writing to us with this question. We are delighted to know that you have actually taken the time to write about an issue that is obviously of great personal concern to you. We also realize that through the response to your question, many other Muslim women, both young and old, will be helped in sha’ Allah.

First, let’s not overlook the positive. Allah Most High has guided you to be religious, ma sha’ Allah, and has encouraged your daughter to be religious. We do not want to underestimate the value, in this day and age, of a mother and daughter team who are both religious. On top of all this, you are also active in charity work, and that is an added blessing to your already being religious.

Second, let’s not talk about hijab just yet, but about role modeling. As an educated mother, you have modeled to your daughter that education is important and ma sha’ Allah,ma sha’ Allah, she is religious at such a young age. Therefore, overall, you are a good role model to your daughter through emphasizing education and religion.

Third, let’s talk about the hijab. You are an educated woman, ma sha’ Allah, and you have come to the following conclusions:
1) That your hair is not fitnah.
2) That you do not think a “little piece of cloth to cover a few inches of hair will add anything to [your] behavior or [your] strong religious beliefs and activity.”
3) That “in Egypt lots of veiled women do not even pray and unfortunately they set a very bad image of Islam.”
4) That when you practice putting on the hijab in front of the mirror, you feel like you are “looking at someone else” and you “feel that [you] lost [your] identity.”

Those four conclusions could be discussed and debated at length. Since you are an educated woman, we want to pose some questions for you to consider at your own leisure: why is it that only your hair is not fitnah? Moreover, your hair is not fitnah for whom? How do you know what impact or affect your hair has on men? Why do you believe that the hijab is meant to add anything to your behavior? Do you believe the hijab is supposed to make a person more religious? How? Shouldn’t it be the other way around; that instead of adding something to a woman’s behavior, wearing the hijab actually complements a woman’s struggle to be religious? Isn’t a religious person someone who would try to follow all the commandments of Allah and therefore would already be putting on the hijab anyway? Just because some women who wear the hijab do not pray and set a bad image for Islam, should we do away with the hijab altogether or should we attempt to help those few women to improve themselves? When does it ever make sense to do away with the hijab, which promotes modesty and dignity, just because a minority behave badly while wearing it?

The main question we want to ask you is whether you actually believe that the hijab is obligatory for Muslim women who have reached the age of maturity? If you truly love Allah and His Messenger and consider yourself religious, then you will also obey Allah and His Messenger and strive endlessly to seek His pleasure through wholehearted and complete submission. You are so close to achieving that submission since you already do so much of what Allah has commanded us to do. Isn’t it possible then that your own personal desire to maintain an image of who you think you are is overpowering your conscience, which is guiding you to consider wearing the hijab?

Of course it will look like you are looking at someone else when you wear the hijab, because you are fundamentally altering the shape of your head and face to some degree by covering up your hair! Nevertheless, you should not fear this new and different look because it is the look of one who, despite being fully educated and given the ability to choose, has chosen to submit to Allah Most High. Your identity is not lost, it has been enhanced, blessed, transformed into a being who, after years of struggle, has achieved peace and tranquility in her heart through complete and unflinching submission to Allah Most High.

You are obviously a very special person because you have not forced your personal beliefs onto your own daughter. But imagine how painful it must be for your daughter to know that at the height of being educated, her mother chose to disobey Allah Most High, how challenging that feeling must be for a child! For your own sake, and for the sake of your daughter’s peace of mind, go back to the mirror, put on the hijab and greet the new you, the one who is at peace with herself by having pleased her Lord!

Indeed, we make du`aa' for you to be among those mentioned in Surat Al-Fajr (verses 27-30), when Allah Most High says,

(To the righteous soul will be said :) “O (thou) soul, in (complete) rest and satisfaction! Come back thou to thy Lord—well pleased (thyself), and well pleasing unto Him! Enter thou, then, among My devotees! Yea, enter thou My Heaven!”

Read those verses of Surat Al-Fajr in the original Arabic and reflect on them. You will not lose your identity when you wear the hijab, you will still be that educated, religious Muslim woman, but now your identity will,in sha’ Allah, be complete!

If you must sing ...

Umar ibn al-Khattab, Allah be well-pleased with him, was approached one day by some people who complained, "We have an imam who, after praying the Asr prayer with us, began to sing!" Umar went with them and asked the man to recite to him what he had sang to them. He said:

My heart, every time I scold it, returns to pleasures
that fatigue me.
I never see it occupied except with empty pastimes
all the time, harming me.
My evil companion, what childishness is this?
Life has passed and you still play?
My youth has gone and left me
before I ever put it to its right use!
My soul! You and your lusts are nothing.
Fear Allah. Fear Him. Fear Him!

Umar repeated the last verse over and over, weeping. Then he said, "Whoever among you must sing, let him sing such things."

Narrated by the hafiz Ibn al-Sam`ani as cited in Kanz al-`Ummal (8944).
